So, high altitude and long-distance trek can challenge one physically and mentally.

Acclimatization

Nepal is a highly sought-after destination for travelers and hikers due to its diverse topography, varying altitudes, and rich cultural heritage. One of the popular treks in Nepal is the Tsum Valley with Manaslu trek, covering over 230 km and encompassing a significant altitude range from 2493m to 5165m. While this journey can be physically challenging, even for those in good shape, it typically induces common cold or flu symptoms rather than posing severe health concerns, thanks to the sudden climate shift.

For most trekkers, especially foreigners from lower altitudes, acclimatizing to Nepal’s environmental conditions above 2500m can be a significant obstacle during the trek. Altitude sickness, a common condition that emerges above 3000m altitude, can affect individuals who ascend too quickly without allowing proper acclimatization.

To address the risk of altitude sickness, we have designated two nights and a day of acclimatization in both Sama and Samdo village, making them our main priorities during the trek. These acclimatization days will be utilized by engaging in activities such as hiking around the villages, visiting monasteries, immersing ourselves in the local culture, witnessing traditional practices, learning about the traditional way of living, and capturing memorable photographs with the local people. We will also delve into their religion and gain insights into their livelihoods.

Especially in Sama and Samdo village, we will have a beautiful view of mini walls written in the local language close to the Nepal-Tibet border. We will hike to the best viewpoint in the Manaslu region, from where we can witness panoramic views of snow-covered mountains like Larkey Peak, Himchuli, and Simrang. Trekkers may also have the chance to spot the rare bird Himalayan Monal (Lopophorous) and experience the lifestyle of the local people, witnessing their culture and traditions which are similar to Tibetan culture.

Our team of experienced professionals is well-prepared to assist trekkers in overcoming altitude sickness. We strongly recommend staying hydrated by consuming plenty of fluids, including water, tea, and hot soup, to minimize the effects of altitude sickness. Adopting a gradual ascent approach is crucial, allowing the body to acclimate to higher altitudes. Resting frequently and avoiding excessive exertion during hikes or climbs are essential for facilitating adjustment.

It’s important to note that even physically fit individuals may be susceptible to altitude sickness. Therefore, we ensure a slow ascent, typically ranging from 300 to 1000 meters per day, to provide ample time for rest and acclimatization. Our company is committed to providing exceptional service while prioritizing the welfare of our guests. Additionally, we make arrangements for medication in case anyone encounters difficulties in coping with altitude sickness.
