Pumori stands 7,161 meters tall and is a technical climb and ideal challenge for those climbing Everest. Its exposed faces, razorback ridges, and ice fronts make it the most thrilling climbs of the Himalayas. The climb provides magnificent views of Everest, Lhotse, and Nuptse and involves the solitary wilderness of the Khumbu region. The climb demands technical mountaineering skills to meet extreme weather conditions, rockfall, and avalanche risks. Despite all these dangers, reaching the summit is a commendable feat for experienced climbers looking for adventure.
Technical Climb and High Fatalities
Pumori features very steep and highly technical ground and is said to be one of the more difficult of the Himalayan mountains. The route also falls under the falling snow, crevasses, and ice walls and is also subject to avalanches. Climbing also involves going up 40- to 60-degree ice slopes, which requires fix-rope-fixing skills, cramponing skill, and ice climbing skill. The final segment of climbing to the summit is very challenging due to the rockfall and the hanging glacier. Only acclimatized mountaineers who have experienced high-altitude conditions are able to attempt climbing this peak.
Scenic Scenery and Remote Wilderness
Though difficult, the ascent of Pumori offers breathtaking scenery of Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and the Himalayas. The approach to the base camp traverses legendary Gorak Shep, Tengboche, and Namche Bazaar villages, offering scenic and cultural exploration. Climbers traverse glaciers, rock ridges, and boulder fields, and are rewarded with virgin beauty of the Himalayas. The combination of adventure and scenery makes Pumori a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
Severe Weather and Harsh Landscapes
The summit of Pumori is subject to harsh weather, with temperatures falling as low as -30°C. Vertical ice walls, ridges, and bare rock faces make the ascent extremely challenging. Frequent high-altitude snowstorms, hurricane-strength winds, and avalanches are additional dangers. The ascent includes climbing a virtually vertical ice slope, demanding high endurance and mental toughness. Climbers have to deal with rapidly changing weather and unstable weather conditions.
Base Camp and Expedition Logistics
The tour starts from an air tour to Lukla and then ascending via the Khumbu area to Pumori Base Camp (5,300m) Acclimatization plays a very big role, and for days at the high altimeter, climbers acclimatize. Sherpa guides place ropes, ladders, and safety devices to assist while climbing. The climb is a step-by-step progression: Camp 1 (5,650m), Camp 2 (6,200m) on a thin ridge, and Camp 3 (6,480m) under the summit face. The final climb to the summit is a technical, steep rope climb with ice axes and crampons. Oxygen supplement will be needed at high altitude due to thin air.
The trip begins with a flight to Lukla and trekking from Gorak Shep, Namche Bazaar, and Phakding to Pumori Base Camp. It is an 8–10-day trek with a good acclimatization. Supplies and equipment are carried by yaks, dzos, or porters. Climbers acclimatize for a couple of days at base camp before moving on to higher camps. Camp 1 at 5,650m is found on a rock ridge, but Camp 2 at 6,200m entails traversing steep ice slopes and crevasses. The climbers from Camp 2 move to Camp 3 at 6,480m, below the summit face. The climb from here is a steep rock and ice climb and takes 8–10 hours. It requires fixed ropes, ladders, and Sherpa guides in order to safely ascend.
The weather of Nepal is very unpredictable and therefore it is necessary to select the proper season so that the expedition could be climbed successfully. There are two seasons mainly that can be enjoyed for expeditions:
Spring Season:
The spring season (late Feb to May) is the most favorable time for trips to Pumori. Very favorable climate with clear sky and gentle breeze. It would most likely be snow, not dangerous at all, and a better climbing situation. Most climbers go during this season and the paths become quite routine, the ascent relatively safer.
Autumn Season:
Autumn (end of September through the beginning of December) is also a good season to ascend Pumori. Skies are clear and views are superb. Weather is serene, and there is less heat haze for better views of the surrounding peaks. Although trails are not as crowded as in the spring, cold and occasional possibility of storms acclimatize climbers for adverse weather.
Winter Season:
winter from dec to february is very tough to the climbers who are attempting pumori. weather is very cold, and there is strong wind which is difficult to climb. the heavy snow also enhances avalanche danger, so climbing is very dangerous. only expert climbers with advanced equipment should go to climb in this time. routes and base camp are usually empty due to bad weather. despite the risk, winter offers a lone and secluded climbing experience for the thrill-seeking adventurers.
Summer Season:
summer or monsoon from june to august is the worst time for pumori climb. heavy rain makes trails slippery and walking dangerous. cloud cover hinders view, which makes it difficult to recognize routes and navigate. heightened avalanche risks and landslides make the climb dangerous. constant rain also affects logistics, making transport of supplies difficult. due to these factors, few climbers take on pumori during this time.
There are many necessary equipment that trekkers have to carry during the treks. During the Pumori Expedition trekkers can stay at stars to local level hotels at Kathmandu and Pokhara. On the way they have to stay at local community house or tea house enjoying local cuisine but some places they have to stay on tent doing camping because at upper altitude we can’t find any permanent residence house so that trekkers have to carry necessary equipment and materials according to their stay .The necessary materials needed during the treks are as follows.

Pumori Peak is located in the Everest region of Nepal, which is renowned worldwide for its breathtaking natural beauty, diverse altitudes, Sherpa culture and traditions, as well as its popularity for peak climbing and expeditions. The region attracts a significant influx of national and international tourists and mountaineers each year. However, the increasing number of visitors also brings certain risks, such as potential harm to the environment and the vulnerability of rare plants and animals.
To safeguard and preserve these unique natural resources, the Government of Nepal has designated certain areas as restricted zones. Consequently, a permit system has been implemented to regulate access to these areas. Anyone planning to engage in mountaineering or embark on a Pumori Expedition must obtain a permit from the Nepal Mountaineering Association (NMA). The NMA is responsible for issuing permits for mountaineering, expeditions, and peak climbing activities.
The cost of the permit for a Pumori Expedition varies depending on the season. During the spring season, the permit fee is USD 500, while in the autumn season, it is USD 250. For the winter and summer seasons, the permit fee is USD 175. These fees contribute to the conservation and maintenance of the region’s natural resources, ensuring their protection for future generations.
Traveling at altitudes above 7000 meters poses several life-threatening risks. At such high altitudes, sudden weather changes can occur, rendering standard weather forecasts ineffective. Additionally, the risk factors increase as we ascend higher. While trekking or climbing mountains, the health risks, both physical and mental, are significant. Natural disasters such as avalanches and landslides can pose a serious threat. Furthermore, altitude sickness and frostbite are common health issues that require immediate medical attention. In light of these risks, obtaining travel insurance is essential when embarking on expeditions or mountaineering ventures.
While travel insurance cannot prevent natural disasters or mitigate risk factors, it can potentially save lives and provide timely rescue assistance. Moreover, it can protect individuals from financial hardship in case of unforeseen circumstances. Therefore, it is crucial for climbers to thoroughly research and select reputable insurance providers that cater to their specific needs. An ideal insurance policy should include coverage for emergency helicopter rescue, medical treatment, and rescue operations.
Please note that Graceful Adventure Travels Pvt. Ltd. does not sell insurance or engage in such activities. It is advisable to conduct your own research and purchase travel insurance from a reliable source.
