It creates an atmosphere in the monastery which adds to its spiritual relevance along with the remoteness of its location-a very culturally enriching experience for the trekkers

  • Phoksundo Waterfall

It is substantially clear during these months, with moderate temperatures and fantastic mountain and landscape views. The weather is stable; trekking conditions are at their best during spring with flowers in bloom and autumn with a riot of colors.

  • Spring Season:

Trekking Difficulties on Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek

Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek lies in the Dolpo region of remote areas of 2,500-3,600 meters above sea level. Major high factors of difficulty in this trek encompass high altitude, steep ascend and descend, unpredictable weather, and long distances in trekking.

It has a moderate threat of altitude sickness since the top elevation of this trek is at an altitude of approximately 3,600 meters above sea level. Proper acclimatization, maintaining fluid intake, and walking at a constant pace will be some necessary precautions for trekkers. Further, this area consists of rugged terrain, narrow trails, and rocky pathways, making good physical endurance obligatory for trekkers.

The total length of the trek is about 100 km, which calls for 6 to 7 hours of walking every day. The trail goes through areas of dense forest, high cliffs, and river crossing; such paths are really tricky to negotiate. The remoteness of the area entails scarce opportunities to make use of modern facilities; thus, one should be fully prepared for primitive conditions concerning accommodation and nutrition.

The Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek might be considered reasonable for trekkers with certain prior trekking experience due to its moderate trekking grade. Proper fitness and mental determination together with preparation play a key factor in successfully overcoming this incredible wild and untouched area of Dolpo.

Acclimatization

It was Nepal’s diversity in geography and altitude that drew trekkers from all over. The Shey Phoksundo Trek spans about 110 km with an altitude of up to 3611 meters above sea level and thus poses quite a different kind of challenge for trekkers, especially for those unprepared for such heights. Not being extremely difficult, the sudden climatic change and increased altitude may give some mild symptoms to trekkers, such as headache, fatigue, or dizziness, if acclimatization is not done properly.

For most trekkers, but principally for those coming from low-altitude areas, the major problem is the adjustment to the reduced oxygen level above 3000 meters. This might develop into altitude sickness if one goes upward very rapidly and the body isn’t given any time to adjust. For that, we schedule acclimatization days at Ringmo Village, an ancient settlement just next to Phoksundo Lake with rich cultural and spiritual value. The days spent here at rest will be employed in sightseeing of landscapes lying around them and visiting some old Bon monasteries along the way observing living style of the people followed by the residents in Dolpo. During acclimatization hikes, one can make short trips around Phoksundo Lake and get stunning views of Kanjirowa Himal and the turquoise waters of the lake. This is also a chance to see some of the rare wild animals, including blue sheep and Himalayan griffon vultures. Gradual ascent and resting allow the body to become accustomed to altitude, immersed in the rich culture and nature of Dolpo.

Appropriate guides with experience are always there to ensure trekkers maintain good hydration through proper fluid intake that includes plenty of water, herbal tea, and soup, thus easing altitude sickness. The itinerary for the trek has been planned in a way that, every day, there is a gentle rise of about 300 to 700 meters to help the body get acclimatized. We prefer going slowly and steadily and taking proper acclimatization breaks, since even the physically fit can suffer from discomforts caused by high altitude.

By considering the altitude sickness factor, our guides are well-trained and fully equipped, keeping every trekker’s safety and health in mind. Whatever first-aid treatment is necessary, and what immediate emergency action should be done to continue the trek further safely is dealt with accordingly. With better planning and gradual acclimatization, the Shey Phoksundo Trek becomes an exciting journey into one of the remotest parts of Nepal, yet breathtaking.

Trekking Permit for Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek

While anybody is free to trek in Nepal, the government has tried to make it all more special by not issuing permits for a few areas with very special ecosystems and features of culture. Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek requires a permit since actually it lies within the protected area known as Shey Phoksundo National Park. This national park is noted for its tremendous biodiversity, most especially concerning the wildlife-some of these could be endangered species such as snow leopards and blue sheep.

For trekking to the area of Shey Phoksundo, a trekker needs to acquire the following:

1. Shey Phoksundo National Park Entry Permit (SPNP Permit): The area of the national park falls en route, so every trekker has to get this permit. It is available at the office of the Nepal Tourism Board, Kathmandu, and at the park entry point. It costs about 3,000 NPR for foreigners and 1,500 NPR for SAARC nationals.

2. TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System): This TIMS card is required for all trekkers in Nepal because of safety and traceability reasons. It can be received at the office of the Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu, with the payment of 30 USD.

Unlike the restricted area treks like Tsum Valley or Upper Dolpo, Shey Phoksundo Lake Trek does not require Restricted Area Permit (RAP); thus, it’s pretty easy to access. However, in order for the trekkers to go further into Dolpo other than Shey Phoksundo Lake, they have to go through the registered trekking agencies.

These are available from the Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu or through any trekking agencies, and they also require a recently taken passport-size photograph for the application process. With the Dodue permits, the trekkers will enjoy fully the sublimity of the landscapes and the cultural experience along their trek within the Shey Phoksundo area.

We have booked a comfortable hotel for you in Kathmandu in a well-facilitated 3-star hotel as soon as you arrive. We will visit two major cities in Nepal and several villages during the journey. Your diet is of greater importance, so it has become our quality concern of healthy, hygienic, and nutritious meals. You will get to taste all kinds of traditional Nepali food, including Dal, Bhat, and Tarkari, among other delicious dishes of Indian and Tibetan cuisine.

On the camp trails, you taste the local food and drinks of the villages, mainly in Tsum Valley, who are very hospitable to guests. You shall get a chance to savour delectable ethnic food right from a variety of ethnic groups, including Gurung, Thakali, Sherpa among others. Due to its proximity to Tibet, you shall also get the opportunity to taste Tibetan cuisine.

Your travel itinerary is an unforgettable, highly immersive experience. We combine cultural immersion with thrill moments, considering your safety and well-being.

Water to drink

Shey Phoksundo Lake is a geographical trek, encompassing everything from terrace farming land to forests and base camps, where teahouses or lodges might not be available. Use of plastic materials is severely restricted here since the flora and fauna sensitivity prevails in this region, which includes plastic water bottles as well. Every visitor is supposed to carry their own water bottle, which can be filled up with water.

For your safety and hygiene purposes, we do not suggest drinking directly from taps or streams. If your water bottle needs to be refilled, teahouses or lodges along the way may have facilities where you could refill. As the Tsum Valley Trek route is ever popular and busy, therefore properly filtered and boiled water buying could be a necessity that might be essential to safeguarding your health.

Travel Insurance

There are inherent risks and possibilities of some downturns that might occur during the trip to high-altitude destinations like Shey Phoksundo Trek. As such, travel insurance is highly recommended prior to going on the journey, which actually should be included in the norms. Your insurance policy should cover up all expenses related to medical check-ups, ambulance and hospital charges, and helicopter rescue in case of any medical emergencies or unfavorable disasters during your trek.

Because this company, Graceful Adventure, does not possess any insurance policy, the trekkers need to get their certificate from authentic insurance companies. A copy of a trekking certificate is required prior to the starting date of a trek for better coordination in case of a rescue mission or any sudden happening that requires full medical attention. Since outdoor adventures are pretty unpredictable, it is always important to minimize or mitigate risks in order to reduce the chances of mishaps or their potential impact. Thus, travel insurance is highly recommended for treks such as the Tsum Valley Trek.

There are several insurance providers recommended for travelers coming from various parts of the world, such as Online Global Health Insurance, Travelex, Insure My Trip.com, Mondial Assistance, Access America, HCC Medical Insurance Services, Good Neighbour Insurance, International Health, Insuremytrip.com, MultiNational Underwriters, TIC Travel Insurance Coordinators Ltd, Travel Assist, TraveLite, Specialty Group (UK) Limited, FirstAssist Services Limited, Harrison Beaumont, Assistance CORIS, Cover More Travel Insurance, CGU Insurance Limited, and Travel Insurance Consultants Pty. Ltd.

Note: Please note that these recommendations are based on feedback from previous travelers and are provided for informational purposes only.

Electricity and communication in Shey Phoksundo Trek

Shey Phoksundo Trek is an awe-inspiring journey that takes you through some breathtaking landscapes, from emerald forests to lofty peaks. Accommodations in the cities have continuous access to electricity, and free internet is available. It is not obvious that this may not be the case on the trek, so one needs to make appropriate preparation and bring a power bank to keep electronic devices charged on the trail.

In the high-altitude places, there is usually electricity due to mini hydropower or solar panels, but sometimes accessing it may require extra costs: heating, charging batteries, or accessing the internet. It is recommended to take with you a portable power bank that can handle multiple charges simultaneously in order not to get into such sudden expenses and to be better equipped with a power supply during the whole trip.

This shall enable you to plan ahead of time and include a portable power bank as part of the essentials, giving ample opportunities to absorb nature’s beauty through Tsum Valley Trek and keeping your electronic gadgets functional. Remember not to forget taking a power bank with you besides other necessary stuff before embarking on this fascinating journey.

ATM and money Exchange

In urban areas of Nepal, particularly Kathmandu and Pokhara, there are various ATM and money exchange services readily available, making it convenient for travelers to acquire Nepalese currency. However, it’s important to note that these facilities may not be easily accessible in rural areas, where only Nepalese currency is accepted, and modern banking services may be limited.

To ensure a hassle-free trekking experience, it is highly recommended that travelers plan ahead and exchange their foreign currency for Nepalese currency before embarking on their trek. This proactive step ensures that you have an adequate amount of local currency to purchase essentials such as food, water, and other supplies throughout your journey. Local currency exchange services in Kathmandu or Pokhara can offer assistance and guidance, ensuring a smooth and stress-free currency exchange process.

By preparing in advance and obtaining sufficient Nepalese currency, you can confidently explore both urban and rural areas of Nepal, allowing you to make purchases without any inconvenience or reliance on modern banking facilities.

The best time for trekking in Shey Phoksundo Lake is during the spring-from March to May-and autumn-from September to November-seasons. During these months, the weather remains stable and the views of mountains and lake are clear, hence ideal for trekking.

Yes, you need several permits to do this trek to Shey Phoksundo Lake: the Shey Phoksundo National Park Entry Permit and a TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) Card. These are important to have because these are the pre-requisites needed for trekking in the park and other protected areas.

This is considered a moderate-to-challenging trek. You can never get rid of steep up-climbs, rocky pathways, or even high altitude, which stretches to 3,600 meters above sea level. Since this place may increase the acuteness of altitude sickness, one needs proper acclimatization, so preparing for long trekking days has to be one’s priority.

You will be packing essentials for trekking: strong trekking shoes, a sleeping bag, warm clothes, as it gets very cold at night, rain jackets, a hat, and gloves. Other items will include a first-aid kit, sunscreen, a water bottle, snacks, and a camera to shoot the brilliant views.

It usually takes 12-14 days, depending on the pace and acclimatization schedule. The travel time from Kathmandu to Juphal and vice versa is added to the days required for trekking in order to reach Shey Phoksundo Lake.

It is highly advisable to trek with a guide as the route includes difficult and far-flung parts. In addition, guides can assist in case of an emergency and handle permit-related issues.

Generally, the trekking is safe, but, as it is with all high-altitude treks, one needs to be prepared for altitude sickness. To have safe trekking, trek with an experienced and reputed guide, undergo proper acclimatization, and follow safety protocols.

Accommodations en route are basic and comfortable, on sharing basis, in teahouses or lodges. Most of them provide basic food items like rice, dal, vegetables, and noodles. The facilities are basic but quite an authentic experience for trekkers.

Electric electricity is available at some villages that lie on the trek route; however, Wi-Fi and mobile signals are highly limited in pretty far-flung areas from the reaches of modern civilization. Tea houses may charge you a minor payment for allowing you to recharge your gadgets. Better to bring with you a portable charger or a power bank.

To prepare, work on endurance and strength through cardio exercises such as walking, running, or hiking with a weighted backpack. Besides that, one should be able to learn trekking techniques and be physically fit. Practice hiking on uneven terrain to simulate the conditions of the trek.

Shey Phoksundo Lake stands at an altitude of 3,600 meters (11,811 feet). Due to the high altitude, it is very important to trek slowly and take appropriate time for acclimatization.
