Upper Mustang is famous for its cultural identity and history, which celebrates the Tiji Festival of the victory of the prince who saved the kingdom. The city of Lo-Manthang is especially important for being rich in Tibetan Buddhist culture and ancient architecture. This is also the place of the Muktinath Temple, which is holy for Hindus and Buddhists alike. The sky caves are man-made structures etched into cliffs and provide a thrilling experience, accentuated by the scenic natural beauties of the surrounding landscape, including the magnificent mountains such as Annapurna and Dhaulagiri to the east and west, respectively. Lastly, Mustang is the land of Saligrams, fossilized ammonite shells from the Kali Gandaki River, which gave a spiritual touch to the lands and historical past of the area.
Tiji Festival
An annual celebration that the people of Upper Mustang take pride in, Tiji cannot at all be left out as one of the greatest events on the cultural calendar of this region. This is brought up on May and bestows its charms for three complete days. Tiji remembers the memory of a young prince who was able to save an entire kingdom from being destroyed by bringing a demon, Man Tum Ru, to the wilds. This, too, is a merry-making time, when the local people clad in their traditional garb engage in chanting, singing, and dancing. At these times, they also pay homage to being prayerful for peace and prosperity across the world.
Within the Tiji Festival, something richly spiritual crystallizes in Mustang for all those who wish to travel to this part of the world to observe and even become a part of this unique cultural heritage. It draws meaning from how the festival is valued by the people of Mustang, as Christmas or New Year is celebrated in other parts of the world. It has an atmosphere much infective with the traditional practices symbolizing the singular Tibetan Buddhist roots of the region.

Walled City of Lo-Manthang
The ancient walled city of Lo-Manthang truly gives an entry into Nepal’s historical and cultural heart. Crowned by the name “Kingdom of Lo-Manthang,” this city stands at the height of 3,800 meters that adds to its enigmatic charm. Truly, the city is an amazing speaking point reflecting Mustang’s real Tibetan Buddhist culture, which makes it a ‘spiritual center of the region.’ Numerous centuries-old monasteries, forts, and shrines are waiting to be explored by visitors: each whispers the tale of a robust Buddhist heritage within the region.
Lo-Manthang is the plate of history for a history aficionado as well as a spiritual seeker with its well-preserved traditions and artifacts. The existence of its unique layout of the walled city and the preserved architect of Tibetan influences are proofs of its civilization over centuries. Trekking this rugged terrain to get to this city offers visitors an unparalleled view into the life and culture of this region. This alone makes it a unique place to visit in the Upper Mustang trek.

Culture of Tibetan Buddhism
It is Tibetan Buddhism that sits at the core of the entire cultural identity of Mustang as it governs every single component of life here. Lifestyle practices among the people of Mustang combine traditional Buddhist and folk practices with their deep Tibetan roots. These are the monasteries and temples-illustrated with ornate Buddhist symbols and carvings-become centers for worship, learning, and meditation. Trained students from the famous monasteries share this wisdom with the visitors.
They enlighten guests on the practices of Buddhism, meditation techniques, and the philosophy of life. Most tourists will come to visit and relish the visual beauty of the place but leave carrying bits and pieces of the deeper spiritual considerations that most of the local life is based on. There is a strong chant from here, an inspiring view of colorful prayer flags, and the sight of monks in robes: this creates a truly tranquil yet enlightening environment. Tibetan Buddhist culture adds to its own, what in the charm and allure of the region might still have been lost in history.

Muktinath Temple
This is a visit to one of the most renowned piligrimage sites for Hindus and Buddhists alike, which draws many tourists in Upper Mustang. At an altitude of about 3,800 meters, the temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in Hinduism and the Dakinis, or sky dancers, in Buddhism. It presents an amazing view of the surrounding mountains including the towering peaks of Annapurna and Dhaulagiri.
Muktinath is the destination where pilgrims worship to cleanse their souls in the holy waters of 108 stone taps. There is, however, another wonder that draws admirers, the eternal flame lying here, fed on natural gas. The temple being an important spiritual center for Buddhists performing rituals for the Dakinis is also endowed with meaning going beyond that of Hinduism. The journey to Muktinath portrays a pilgrimage and also cultural and religion traces out from the live experiences that the Upper Mustang region can show.

Sky Caves of Mustang
Sky caves are an intriguing and very mysterious facet of this region’s heritage. The caves which were carved into the cliffs of these river valleys have been used for centuries for religious or residential purposes by the locals. Many are believed to be over 2,000 years old, bringing to life the gory past of this rugged and remote area. With more than 10,000 caves throughout Mustang, they are a treasure for archaeology and culture. Usually high above the valley floor, these caves create magnificent views and provide fun to trekkers.
Many of these sky caves are decorated with ancient Buddhist murals, artifacts, and shrines, making them a prime point of interest for the history and culture enthusiasts. Sky caves of Mustang are architectural marvels on their own and speak about the real toughness and spiritual depth of the region; UNESCO tentative lists make them even more important historical and cultural sites.

Natural Beauty
Being one of the major components for trekkers and nature enthusiasts alike, this natural beauty does excuse itself. Standing at an elevation of about 3,800 meters, Mustang is encircled by dramatic landscapes that are totally unique and breathtaking. It is for one’s own eyes to see the region well known for the desert-like conditions that exist where rough and jagged terrains are interspersed by rocky cliffs, deep valleys, and riverbeds. Though a dry region, it gives splendid views of the towering peaks like Annapurna, Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri, and Tukuche.
The stark contrast between the barren landscapes and the snow-capped mountains creates a surreal and mesmerizing scene. The flora and fauna here are also unique, with the high-altitude ecosystem supporting a range of wildlife and plant species adapted to the harsh environment. Mustang is incredibly beautiful and it truly offers a paradise for those looking for solitude, adventure.

Saligrams
The scenic Kali Gandaki River, which flows through Mustang, is famous not only for its beauty but also because of the weird occurrence of Saligrams, a sacred stone worshipped in Hinduism. Saligrams are fossilized ammonite shells that lie in the river bed, chiefly in the Kali Gandaki Valley, and are seen as symbols of Lord Vishnu. Round and black stones are mostly kept by Hindus as symbols of the deity in their homes and temples. The river Saligrams influence both spiritual and cultural life for the people in Mustang.
Many trekkers and pilgrims collect Saligrams for memories or offerings towards the end of their trek. The river has a great historical geology, since it is Saligrams that are remains from the Devonian-Cretaceous era which is over 400 million years old. Saligrams of Mustang thus prove interesting not only as geological attractions but also for their deep-rooted religious and cultural values, making them a major attraction for trekkers on the Upper Mustang Trek.

Nepal is a small country filled with towering hills and mountains, resulting in uneven geographical conditions. With altitudes ranging from 60 to 8849 meters, the climate and weather vary greatly. Our Upper Mustang Trek involves trekking through altitudes ranging from 1000m to 4000m above sea level, which may cause common colds or coughing, but these are not serious health issues.
However, as our trek takes us above 3000 meters, there is a risk of altitude sickness, especially for those who have never been at such high elevations before. To combat this, our highly experienced team is well-equipped and trained to assist trekkers.
We strongly advise our guests to consume plenty of fluids, including water, hot soup, and tea, to help prevent altitude sickness. We also employ a gradual approach to ascending to higher elevations, allowing sufficient time for the trekkers’ bodies to adjust to the changing environment. It is essential to rest frequently and avoid overexertion during hikes or climbs, to allow the body to acclimatize properly.
Even physically fit individuals may be susceptible to altitude sickness, which is why we ascend slowly, typically 300 to 1000 meters per day, to ensure proper rest. Our company prioritizes providing the best service while taking care of our guests. The Upper Mustang Trek is classified as moderate level trek, taking into account factors such as altitude, weather and climate, topography, and season. The difficulty level also depends on the physical fitness of the trekkers.
With an altitude ranging from 1,500 to 3,800 meters above sea level, the Upper Mustang region poses a challenge to those who haven’t experienced higher altitudes. As a rain shadow area beyond the Annapurna Himalayan range, Mustang’s weather is clear but dry, earning it the nickname “the desert of Nepal.” The region receives very little rainfall throughout the year, resulting in a dry climate.
However, due to the higher altitude, the amount of oxygen is lower, and atmospheric pressure is significantly less compared to sea level, which can cause some issues and raise the difficulty level from easy to moderate.
The topography of Mustang is uneven, with some areas being high, others low, some stony, and others dusty. This uneven land topography makes the path narrow in some places and wide in others, with some sections uphill and others downhill. These factors can also pose a challenge to the fitness of trekkers.
The Upper Mustang region is dry throughout the year, except during winter when heavy snowfall makes the trek impossible. In all other seasons, the trail is doable and has a low chance of rain, making it less slippery. The trail is well-maintained and not very steep, making it suitable for individuals, children, elderly people, families, and colleagues.
In conclusion, the Upper Mustang Trek is rated as easy to moderate due to the well-maintained trail, low chance of rain, and manageable terrain. This trek is suitable for all age groups and types of groups like individual, family, colleague etc. making it a popular choice for those looking for an unforgettable experience.
In Nepal, trekking is a popular activity that is carried out throughout the country. However, there are some areas that are restricted in order to preserve and conserve nature, flora and fauna, historical and cultural heritage, and other important aspects. For instance, places like the Annapurna Conservation Area, Chitwan National Park, wildlife reserves, and Upper Mustang are restricted and require an entry permit from the Nepalese government, which typically costs around $25.
For those planning to trek to Upper Mustang, there are three different types of permits required. Firstly, anyone trekking in Nepal needs a Trekker’s Information Management System (TIMS) card, which can be obtained from the Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu or Pokhara. The TIMS card is compulsory and must be obtained before beginning the trek.
Secondly, the trail to Upper Mustang passes through the Annapurna Conservation Area, so trekkers must also obtain an Annapurna Conservation Area entry permit (ACAP). The ACAP can also be obtained from the Nepal Tourism Board in Kathmandu or Pokhara, and the permit fee is approximately 3000 NRP. A photograph is required for the application.
Finally, the most important and compulsory permit for trekking to Upper Mustang is the Restricted Area Permit (RAP). Those trekking to Upper Mustang must obtain the RAP, which costs $500 per person for at least 10 days. If the trek is longer than 10 days, an additional fee of $50 per person per day is charged. The trek must be done in a group of at least two people, and individuals cannot trek to Upper Mustang or Lo Manthang. The RAP can only be obtained by a registered trekking company from the government, and neither trekkers nor guides can obtain it themselves.
In summary, while trekking in Nepal is a popular activity, it is important to obtain the necessary permits to ensure the preservation and conservation of the natural, historical, and cultural heritage of the country.
The food services on the Upper Mustang trek are uncomplicated but nourishing; they form a link between Tibetan traditions and those of local lifestyles through sustenance for the trekkers’ straining journey. Food generally includes staples like dal bhat (lentils, rice, and sometimes vegetables), Tibetan bread, and noodle soups made with locally grown ingredients beneficial to energy and sustenance. The remote location provides fresh and filling food, also doubling as an insight into the local Tibetan-influenced flavors.
As the height increases, local specialities like yak meat curry, thukpa (Tibetan noodle soup), and gundruk (fermented leafy greens) would be sampled by trekkers. Albeit simple, the sustenance offered the physical strength needed for an arduous trek while allowing trekkers a taste of the true Mustang. The friendliness of the locals makes the meal warmer, above and beyond providing nourishment to touch the culture of the region.
Accommodation throughout the Upper Mustang trek is basic, thereby allowing comfort and an honest taste of local life. Considerably more rustic than accommodation lodges on popular trekking routes, tea houses and a couple of small guest houses nevertheless provide a homely atmosphere on the trek. There are usually twin-sharing rooms with basic bedding. The lodges are family-runs that offer an authentic taste of their mountain hospitality. While trekkers are accustomed to the high-class accommodation of four-star hotel of Kathmandu, the lodging for this trek is primitive but warm and welcoming.
High altitude works with limited facilities: common bathrooms and basic amenities like solar-powered electricity. Accommodation-wise, it has X-factor that allows the trekkers to adjust for altitude and the experience of the local life. It is advisable for trekkers during the cold season to carry their sleeping bags to help stay warm in these remote lodgings. Accommodation adds to the region’s remoteness charm, offering travelers another rare opportunity to meet with the local culture and people.
Transportation services for the Upper Mustang trekking begin right from Kathmandu by adventuring over to Pokhara then flying to Jomsom from there. The flight is thrilling as it will really reward with good Himalayan scenes, landing on a rugged habitat – Jomsom – below. And it’s on foot from here that trekkers will set off into the seclusion beauty that is Upper Mustang. Here it’s without roads; beyond Jomsom, traffic access is no longer possible, keeping the trek serene and devoid of distraction by modernity. Private jeeps are commonly used for small groups, while larger groups might share mini bus according to group size.
There might be mule caravans, or yaks, which are used largely to carry goods throughout this remote area during the trek. After finishing a circuit, trekkers return to Jomsom, and flights take them back to Pokhara. The absence of road infrastructure adds to the experience of wilderness, allowing trekkers to completely immerse themselves in adventure and the fantastic nature of Upper Mustang.
The Upper Mustang Trek is a breathtaking journey that takes you through a variety of landscapes, including terrace farming, forests, historical and cultural heritages, passes. It is important to note that in order to preserve the local flora and fauna, the use of plastic materials, including plastic water bottles, is strictly prohibited. Visitors are encouraged to bring their own reusable water bottles, filled with water, to ensure that they have access to safe and clean drinking water throughout the trek.
To guarantee the safety and hygiene of our guests, we strongly advise against drinking water directly from taps or streams. When your water bottle runs out, you can refill it at any of the available teahouses or lodges along the route. However, please be aware that due to the high volume of visitors on the Upper Mustang Trek, it may be necessary to purchase properly filtered and boiled water.

Electricity and internet access will be available 24/7 in urban areas. However, during treks, there may be instances of power outages in some village areas. Even in tea houses or lodges where you choose to stay, there may be additional charges for utilizing electricity or internet services due to the busy route or rural location. Please note that during the trek, access to electricity or internet will not be available. Therefore, it is advised to charge your electronic devices in the tea houses or lodges where you will be lodging.
Nepal’s bustling urban hubs, namely Kathmandu and Pokhara, offer a plethora of convenient ATM and money exchange services that facilitate the acquisition of Nepalese currency for travelers. However, such amenities may not be readily available in rural areas, where only Nepalese currency is accepted, and modern banking infrastructure may be scarce.
To circumvent any potential inconveniences, it is strongly advised that travelers plan in advance and exchange foreign currency for Nepalese currency before embarking on a trek. This will ensure that adequate local currency is readily available to purchase essentials such as food, water, and other necessary supplies during the trek. Seeking guidance from local currency exchange services in Kathmandu or Pokhara can also help expedite the process and minimize any undue stress.

Tipping is a customary way of expressing gratitude for services rendered in Nepal. It is a discretionary practice, and trekkers may choose to tip individuals at their discretion based on their personal satisfaction with the services provided.
Tipping is typically offered on the final day of the trek, although trekkers may choose to tip hotel staff, lodge employees, or other individuals at any time during their trip. When deciding on the amount to tip, it is essential to consider the quality of the service provided, the duration of the service, and the level of personal satisfaction.
While tipping is a common practice in Nepal, it is not obligatory, and trekkers should not feel pressured to tip if they are not satisfied with the services received. Additionally, if a trekker is unable to tip due to financial constraints, it is important to express gratitude verbally by saying ‘Dhanyabad’ or ‘Thank you.’
