Your day starts in the late morning after breakfast. Early in the morning, we will take a flight to Tumlingtar 35 mins from Kathmandu and views of the mountains are great if the weather is clear. After landing at Tumlingtar you’ll head to Khandbari, a major town in Sankhuwasabha district. There is plenty of rural life to observe as you head upwards with fields of corn, bamboo and sal trees. Then the journey continues to Num.

As soon as you finish your delicious breakfast you are ready to start our day for trek. Makalu Barun National Park started from the checkpoint where we’ve to register our details. We’ve to cross the river by suspension bridge, then climb from the opposite bank of the river. We have to make several ascent and descents as we travel along Barun River. Accepting the all challenges being the long, winding climbing to Seduwa, passing groves of giant bamboo and bustling village.

Today, you will walk through meadows and farms up to Tashi Gaun. Trek begins with climbing on a path with many stone and pass several mini walls as you head up to Sherpa Village. There are chances to see cinematic panorama view of mountains. You walk through many small farms dotted across the hillside, cardamon plantations, bamboo and rhododendron forests. You will reach the small settlement of Chyaksa Danda where you can found tea shop, school and several houses. In some places you are walking through dense forest and have to cross a few streams on good log bridges. And continue trek to today’s destination.

Today you’ve to be prepared for lots of ascent. As it will be difficult day on a steep pathway where you should cross the log bridge and continue walking through rhododendron forest and seasonal Yak herderds. Beautiful landscape attracts everyone on the trail. After approx. 3 hours walk you will reach at Dhara where you can found tea house and it’s your last stop until you reach Khongama.

Today you must cross Ghenguru La (4045m), Shipton La (4216m), and keke La (4150). So, after breakfast at the same teahouse you will start your day. The views of Chamlang, Peak 6, Peak 7 are breathtaking. From the pass we descend to Sano Pokhari and Thulo pokhari and descending we reach Mumbuk. You can get outstanding sight of colorful landscape from the viewpoint.

Makalu Barun Trek is also famous for Shivadhara. You start your day with breakfast at Yangle Kharka, then continue our trek to Shivadhara. Shivadhara is very famous among pilgrim. This domelike cave, about 500 feet high, has a large waterfall coming out of its stone roof. The waterfall is considered a scared tap of Lord Shiva. To get this place one has to climb an extremely dangerous cliff with the help of locals, which will take about 3-4 hours. Those who have Acrophobia can skip this place. You can take bath in the sacred spring that cascades from high cliff. After taking bath at Shivadhara we’ll move to Parbatidhara and back to lodge

Following a moderate walk to the valley, we pass through yak pastures, lush forests and boulder fields. The valley walls tower imposingly above us during the start of the trek. We pass Merek as we make our way further up and notice a significant rise in the scenic Himalayan views. Chasing the mesmerizing view of the Himalayas, we continue our trek walking on moraines and pass small Himalayan villages to reach Langmale Kharka.

You arrive, A momentous day of your trip. We depart to Makalu Base Camp from Langmale Kharka via Shershong. The view of Mt.Makalu which is the 5th highest mountain in the world can be seen from the Shershong. The trail comprises views of various glaciers and snowy mountains. Mountains like Baruntse, Kali Himal, Chamlang and Makalu II can be seen from the base camp. After base camp exploration you’ll back to Shershong.

Finally we will explore Makalu Base Camp from there you have an excellent view of Mt.Makalu, Peak 6, Peak 7, baruntse,and panorama of Everest and Lhotse. You cross the river on the log bridge and ascend on a vague, slightly indeterminate path for around 3 hours. It’s a strenuous undertaking as it’s steep and the altitude will surely bite above 5000m.

You trek down to Num today to finish your trekking. This is your final foot trek day. By following same trail, you will reach at Num. Today’s trail leads you through a thick forest and takes you to Tashi Gaun. As you exit the Makalu Barun National Park trail descend to the Barun River and then come across villages and settlements. Finally, you’ll reach to Num village.

On this day, we will leave the Num and drive back to the Tumlingtar. From Tumlingtar we will flight back to Kathmandu by domestic flight and escorted to your hotel.

Makalu Base Camp Trek difficulty lies from moderate to toughest trek in the world. This trek demand physical and mental fitness of the trekker. One should not be suffering from the knee or ankle problem alongside heart and lung diseases. During trek cold climate will add the challenges.
This trek is completed by 6-7 hours of walking per day having enough breaks in between. You should prepare for this trek with adequate exercise and fitness 1-2 month prior to the trek date. These could include daily walking, going for a hike, a long walk once in a week, doing yoga related breathing etc.
Food and Accommodation are priorities for every traveler during the Makalu Base Camp trek. Makalu lies in rural area of the country and the 5 star hotels are not available but we can provide excellent lodge houses and hotels. The hotels are mostly twin sharing and the single bedroom can be managed upon your request.
Food is essential during the trek. Burning of food is the essence of energy to achieve this trek. There’s a saying in Nepalese “Dal Bhat power, 24 hours” meaning the dal bhat gives you the power to withstand for almost a day. The national cuisine is dal bhat however other foods such as noodle soups vegetables soup can be prepared.
We strongly encourage you to avoid hard drinks and highly caffeinated drinks and dairy products as they may cause difficulties in higher elevation to your physiology and health.
Spring and Autumn are considered the best time for Makalu Base Camp. Spring that falls between February to April has best achieved climate. During Spring, the sight of lush green forests and blooming rhododendron welcomes you. This is best season to witness the flowering plants with fabulous mountain views. The temperatures are mild hot at lower levels, and it gets colder as you climb higher elevation.
Similarly, Autumn falls between September to November is best time for Makalu Base Camp. During Autumn the skies are usually clear and the giant of snowy mountains are phenomenal. The day time temperature is very stable. Early morning and at night the weather can be a bit cold. But warm sunny days make the walk comfortable.
Though not highly preferred, the rainy season from early June to late august can be the time for Makalu Base Camp trekking. This season has the most changeable climate i.e. from clear to rainy weather. However, the time isn’t the harshest as no snow falls in this season and one can enjoy the monsoon alongside the rocky mountain terrain.
The period between late November to early February is not preferred as it is the winter season and has the harshest cold. The most casualties heard occur during this season. The continuous down pouring of icefall and the temperatures to the minus degree Celsius in minutes makes this trek almost impossible. Thus, choosing the best time is must while pursuing this luxury trek in Nepal.

When the elevation is above 2000m from the sea level AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness) symptoms can be seen due to less oxygen in the atmosphere, which will make breathing difficult. Dizziness, Headache, Fatigue, Nausea are the symptoms of AMS.
Remember you’ll be trekking above 5000m in Makalu Base Camp Trek, so there is a less chance to get AMS. You should walk slowly and steadily to let your body get used to the thin air. If you try to walk fast and cover high altitude in less time, there are chances to get AMS. Precaution should be used to keep conditions from worsening. Drink Plenty of water which keeps the body hydrated and have balanced diet food that can energize your body.
To prevent AMS acclimatization is included in our Itinerary. Acclimatization is very important as our destination is in high altitude. Clients can bring back in a worst scenario.
